Things to Do in Aspen in Summer

Summer in Aspen might be the valley's best-kept secret. When the snow melts, the mountains explode with wildflowers, the trails open up, world-class music fills the air, and the crowds are a fraction of ski season. Peak wildflower season runs late June through late July — one of the most spectacular natural shows in Colorado. Here's how to make the most of it.

Outdoors

Maroon Bells

The most photographed spot in Colorado and one of the most iconic landscapes in North America. The twin peaks reflected in Maroon Lake surrounded by wildflowers is unforgettable. From June to September, the road is restricted to traffic after 8am — take the shuttle from Aspen Highlands (leaves every 20 minutes) or drive in early. Reserve your vehicle pass at recreation.gov well in advance.

Hiking

Aspen has over 86 trails ranging from casual river walks to challenging alpine climbs. Hunter Creek Trail (a local favorite, walkable from downtown), the Ute Trail, Smuggler Mountain (great views of downtown), and the Rio Grande Trail along the river are all excellent starting points. For something more challenging, Cathedral Lake and the Four Pass Loop around Maroon Bells are bucket-list hikes.

Mountain Biking

Snowmass Bike Park is one of the best in Colorado, with trails ranging from beginner-friendly to expert. Rent a bike in town or at the mountain. The Lost Forest at Snowmass also has a mountain coaster, ziplines, and a ropes course — great for families.

Silver Queen Gondola & Bluegrass Sundays

Ride the Silver Queen Gondola to the top of Aspen Mountain (free if you hike up) and enjoy free Bluegrass Sundays from 12–3pm all summer. Lawn games, great views, food and drinks at the Sundeck restaurant. One of the best free activities in Aspen.

Roaring Fork River

Paddleboarding, rafting, kayaking, and floating. From gentle floats at North Star Nature Preserve to whitewater adventures further down the valley. The river runs right through town and is a big part of Aspen summer life.

Music & Culture

Aspen Music Festival & School

Over 400 events from late June through August — one of the premier classical music festivals in the United States. Many performances are free or low-cost. Students often play informally around town, most famously outside Paradise Bakery in the evenings.

Belly Up

Listed by Rolling Stone as one of the best clubs in America, this 450-capacity venue at 450 S. Galena St. hosts chart-topping artists all summer in an incredibly intimate setting. Past performers include Kaleo, Trombone Shorty, and countless others. Tickets sell out fast — book ahead.

Free Concerts at Snowmass

Every Thursday evening on Fanny Hill, Snowmass Village hosts free outdoor concerts all summer. The 2025 lineup included Ozomatli, Boy Named Banjo, and The Talbott Brothers. Take the free RFTA bus from downtown Aspen — a perfect summer evening.

Food & Wine Classic

Held every June, this is one of the premier food and wine events in the United States. Celebrity chefs, master sommeliers, and thousands of tastings take over the pedestrian mall and Aspen Institute grounds. Book accommodation far in advance — the town fills up completely.

Aspen Ideas Festival

Late June to early July at the Aspen Institute campus. World leaders, scientists, journalists, and innovators gather for lectures and discussions. A uniquely Aspen experience that reflects the town's intellectual tradition.

Saturday Farmers Market

Runs June through October on the pedestrian mall. Local Colorado produce, artisan food, jewelry, art, and live music. A true community gathering that locals and visitors love equally. One of the best free Saturday morning activities in Aspen.

When to Go

Late June through July is peak wildflower season and the busiest event period. August is mellower with great weather and full trail access. September and early October offer golden aspen trees, smaller crowds, and cooler temperatures — arguably the most beautiful time of year.

Independence Pass (Highway 82 over the Continental Divide) is open June through October — a spectacular drive or bike ride that's impossible in winter.
